Police: $53 million in jewels stolen in Cannes - Sunday 28th July 2013

PARIS (AP) -- A staggering 40 million euro ($53 million) worth of diamonds and other jewels was stolen Sunday from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, in one of Europe's biggest jewelry heists in recent years, police said. One expert noted the crime follows recent jail escapes by members of the notorious "Pink Panther" jewel thief gang.

The hotel in the sweltering French Riviera was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit over the summer from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

You do not have to be a jeweler to get robbed. It can happen to anyone anywhere.

On Tuesday October 18, 2006 the owner of this insurance agency attended a committee meeting in the clubroom of a property in Southwest Houston. Eight people finished the meeting at 9:10 pm. Two people left the room to go outside to take a few puffs of their smokes (bad habit) and then returned to the room while the rest sat chatting. A third person entered after them and at first nobody paid serious attention as they thought it was the property maintenance man wearing a baseball cap. They then noticed that this black man was a foot taller and had a ski mask over his face and a small shiny silver gun in his hand. He instructed everyone to put their hands on the table and proceeded to go through everyone's pockets looking for cash. He took cash out of wallets and literally made out (off) like a bandit.

So the bottom line is - you do not have to be a jeweler to get robbed. It can happen to anyone anywhere. Stay safe and healthy.
